A young couple is on a mountain pass on their way back from a drive.
The sun has set. There are no oncoming cars and no streetlights.
They, perhaps tired from talking, is wrapped in a fleece blanket and breathing lightly.
He, the driver, stares into the darkness outside the car to shake off the drowsiness.
About halfway through the pass, he noticed a white sedan parked at a waiting area.
Without thinking, he slowed his car down.
The cars parked in such places are, without exception, emergency hotel substitutes for lovers who have no money to stay in hotels.
As he peeked out the rear window, the sedan door suddenly swung open, and he locked eyes with a woman who stepped out from inside.
He felt awkward, so he sped up his car and turned to leave.
The woman looked at his car. He felt a strong gaze through the rearview mirror and looked up.
To his surprise, the woman was running after his car!
Awkwardness turns to horror. He speeds up his car.
His car accelerates to the limit on the narrow road of the mountain pass.
But the woman keeps up with him at a speed that no human would ever be able to keep up with.
He shuddered when he saw the woman’s face illuminated red by the brake lights.
“It’s Yamamba! It’s Yamamba!”
There it was, the image that had been written on the pages of his mind’s fear since he had read it in a picture book when he was a child.
The face of a wrinkled, hideous demon woman looming over him, her hair shaking in the air.
He stepped on the gas pedal to the floor, apologizing desperately.
He finds himself in the parking lot of a convenience store at the foot of the mountain.
His girlfriend in the passenger seat wakes up.
He tells her the whole story of what just happened at the pass.
As she listens to him, her eyes gradually become clearer and her expression changes to one of astonishment.
He felt a sense of relief as he told her the story, and all the tension he had felt up to that point began to dissipate.
When she finished listening to him, she said something that made sense to him.
I had a dream, too. I dreamed that I was desperately chasing your car…
You would leave me in the middle of a mountain pass.
No matter how much I called and shouted, you wouldn’t wait for me.
I really thought for a moment, ‘I’m going to kill you!
