Scary story

#22 A scary story he encountered when he lived alone for the first time

This is what I encountered when I entered college and lived alone.

The apartment I was living in at the time was a two-story, well-constructed student apartment with a row of rooms for single people.
The building was old. To be honest, I did not have a very good impression of the apartment from the time the real estate agent showed me around, but it was late in the year when I was looking for a room, and I did not have much time before I entered the university, so I had no choice but to choose that apartment after consulting with my father, who accompanied me on the tour of the apartment.

I moved into a corner room on the second floor facing the street.
After deciding on the room, I moved out in a hurry, and soon after the entrance ceremony.
For a while, I was occupied with the unfamiliarity of university and living alone in the city, but after a month had passed since I moved in, I felt more relaxed about my life.

One day, I was biking home and returning to the common hallway from the back of the property.

“Bang!”

Suddenly, I heard a loud noise coming from the room at the end of the hallway.
This room is located on the opposite side of the street on the first floor, directly opposite from my room.
As I approached the room, I heard a series of “bang, bang” as if someone was hitting the door from the inside with all their might, and the doorknob began to jiggle wildly.
As I looked on in disbelief, wondering what was going on, I heard someone’s voice coming from inside the room.

“Hey! The door to my room won’t open. Open the door from the outside!”

I heard a low male voice, impatient and irritated.
In hindsight, I should have left it alone, but I just called out to him.

“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t open the door to my room. Can’t you do something about it from your side?”
“Even if you ask me to do something about it…”

So told, I looked around the door, but could not find anything unusual that was preventing the door from opening.
The doorknob is also normal, and it is odd that the door does not open from the inside to begin with.

“Um, there’s nothing particularly strange over here, is there?”
“It can’t be, the door won’t open! Open the door!”

The man rattles the doorknob and bangs on the door during the conversation.

I actually knew that no one lived in this room.
When I was introduced to the apartment, I asked the real estate agent which room was available, and this room was vacant.
I had the impression that it was in the wrong location or that it was dimly lit, so I knew I didn’t want this room, so I remembered it.
And when I passed by the back of the property just a few minutes ago, I actually saw with my own eyes through the window that the room was empty.
The room was fully visible from the window with no curtains. It was an empty room without a single piece of furniture, and there was nothing to prevent anyone from coming in or out.

“Hey, open up! I know you’re in there! Hey, open this door!”

I was so grossed out by the voices that followed and the continuous banging on the door that I fled the scene.
I didn’t even feel like going back to my room, so I spent the night at a 24-hour family restaurant.
In the end, after forcing my father to pay for my move, I decided to move out of the apartment just two months after moving in.

What was in that room?
A thief would never break into an empty room….
What would have happened to me if I had opened the door at that time….
Maybe it was a room with a reason, but I don’t have the courage to find out now.
It doesn’t matter. I don’t want to know, and I don’t want to get involved.
