Most famous in Japan

#56 One of Japan’s most famous scary stories, “Turbo Granny”

I believed in spirits, but I had never seen one before. Until a year and a half ago…

We went snowboarding at a ski resort in Yuzawa with my girlfriend and two friends, four of us in total.
There was S’s resort condo in Yuzawa, and we went there for 3 days and 2 nights.
There was a huge blizzard that time of year, and we couldn’t ski properly two days out of the three days and two nights because of the blizzard.

Unfortunately, there was a blizzard on the last day, too.
In the morning, I was still skiing with great enthusiasm, but in the afternoon, the blizzard became stronger and stronger, so I finished before evening.

After returning to the apartment and taking a breather, we prepared to go home and headed for home.
Since we all lived in Tokyo, we planned to take the Kan-Etsu Expressway from Yuzawa to the Gaikan Ring on the way home.
However, the Yuzawa interchange was closed due to a snowstorm, and we had to wait in front of the interchange for a while to see what would happen.
However, there was no sign of recovery, so we decided to take the local road home.
In hindsight, I was not in such a hurry and could have returned to the resort condo once and taken the highway home.

We decided to take the local road and things were going well.
However, the number of cars gradually decreased.

When we hit a mountain road, I noticed unusual movement of the car.
I was sitting in the back seat with my girlfriend, but the movement of the car and my friend’s steering wheel didn’t seem to match.
I thought the tires were slipping on the snowy road.
However, I thought something was wrong with the unusual slipping of the tires.
I said to my friend, “Your tires are very slippery, I don’t care if it slows you down, just drive safely.”
He didn’t respond.
I wondered what was wrong, and my friend in the passenger seat seemed to think so, too.
We both looked at each other and saw the friend’s face.

The friend had a frightened look on his face that he had never shown me in the nine years we had been together.
He didn’t answer our replies, but only looked repeatedly in the rearview mirror.
My friend in the passenger seat looked back in disbelief, and at the same time, I turned around with him.
There was a woman clinging to the car.
It looked like she was trying to stop the car, clinging to the wing of the car and applying the brakes with her feet.
Startled, I told my girl friend do not look back.
To my friend driving, “Speed up!” I told him to shout.
My friend, who had not reacted to our words, suddenly came to her senses.
“I understand,” he replied in a weak voice, stifling his fear.

The car drove through the mountain road at a high speed, making no effort on the slippery snow-covered road.
Usually, when you speed up, the tires slip even more, but strangely enough, the car began to stabilize.
When I fearfully looked back, I saw that the woman clinging to the wing had either swung down or was no longer there.
We had been so relieved, but her scream woke us up.
The woman’s reflection was in the windowpane beside her.
She was running.
She was running to catch up with the car, which was going at least 60 kilometers per hour.
I remember her face glancing at me for a moment and smiling at me.

Just as we were wondering what was going to happen to us, my friend was so terrified that he slammed on the brakes of the car.
He sped up on the snowy road and braked hard. Normally the car would slide.
But due to the fact that the car was equipped with ABS, the car came to a safe stop.
The next thing I knew, the woman was right in front of us.
My friend was startled and accelerated as hard as he could toward the woman.
The car hit the woman! Just when I thought that the car was going to hit the woman, the woman was smiling.
I didn’t even feel the car hit or run over her.

We drove on in constant fear.
How long was it? The car arrived at the city center.
I told my friend, “Let’s go into the first convenience store we find.” Soon after, we found the first one and made a right turn to enter the convenience store.
However, just as I was about to slow down to make the right turn, I heard a bang.
We thought the chain had come off, and when we arrived at the convenience store, we looked at the tires.
There was a large amount of hair, probably from a woman, entangled in the rubber chain.

After that, we were fine.
None of the members who went snowboarding were psychic.
